Neil Warnock shares verdict on Wrexham’s Premier League hopes under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds

Wrexham have achieved three straight promotions under Phil Parkinson, and it’s only natural for supporters to dream of making it four.

Just over two years ago, Wrexham beat Boreham Wood in an incredibly emotional night at the STōK Cae Ras, securing promotion from the National.

Fast forward to the present day, and Wrexham are now less than a month away from kicking off the 2025-26 season as a Championship club.

Wrexham face Southampton on the opening day of the season, and this rise has been something you would only find in your friend’s Football Manager save after they have reloaded following every defeat.

Wrexham’s rise is the stuff of video game dreams, and pulling off such an incredible feat means many are dreaming of Premier League football.

Rob McElhenney certainly sees more Wrexham success coming, and you just can’t rule out promotion to the biggest league in the world one day.

Neil Warnock on Wrexham’s Premier League hopes

Not everybody is on board with the idea of Wrexham reaching the Premier League any time soon.

Troy Deeney claims Wrexham will never be in the Premier League, seemingly feeling that this next step is the biggest jump of all.

Legendary EFL manager Neil Warnock does not agree with the former Watford striker, though.

Speaking to The Athletic, Warnock suggested that Wrexham have the ‘best chance’ of the Welsh clubs when it comes to Premier League football.

Warnock seemingly feels that Wrexham are in the best position to take that next step, despite Swansea finishing 11th in the Championship last season.

Warnock remarked on how nobody would have predicted Wrexham being in this situation even just a few years ago, which really sums up the impact of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

“There’s three Welsh clubs whose objective is reaching the Premier League,” said Warnock. “At the moment, Wrexham has the best chance. And you wouldn’t have said that a few years ago — not unless you’d had a few drinks!”

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds bought Wrexham in 2021, paying around £2million to secure the club.

Some thought the takeover was a fad or a PR stunt, but McElhenney and Reynolds have shown that they mean business with Wrexham.

The Hollywood duo have arguably become the example for foreign owners, having invested their time and money not only into the club, but also the community.

Others have certainly paid attention to the success of McElhenney, Reynolds and Wrexham and are now moving into football ownership themselves.

Real Madrid star and Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has purchased a stake in Swansea this summer, despite still being in the game as a player.

Gareth Bale was linked with investing in Plymouth Argyle, but he is instead focusing on Cardiff City.

If that deal goes through, we will see high-profile investment at Cardiff, Swansea and Wrexham in a fascinating step for Welsh football.

Cardiff will start this season in League One, leaving Swansea and Wrexham to battle it out for Welsh supremacy in the Championship, but all three clubs will have hopes of Premier League football in the future – possibly even all together.
