Mixed reports as Barcelona star considers Premier League return

The Spain international showed his worth in the 2024/25 campaign run-in as Hansi Flick’s side sealed a trophy treble in his debut season.

A injury to Robert Lewandowski gave him a chance to stake a claim as leader of Barcelona’s attack – flanked by Raphinha and Lamine Yamal – and he impressed in the Polish veteran’s absence.

Lewandowski still has the option to extend his contract on into the 2026/27 season, and Torres faces a call on whether he is happy to wait, particularly with a World Cup on the horizon next summer.

Premier League side Aston Villa have been consistently viewed as a possible destination for Torres, despite doubts over his willingness to return to England, after struggling at Manchester City in his early career.

Reports from transfer specialists Fichajes.net claim Unai Emery does have money to spend, despite missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.

However, that rumour is firmly rejected by Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo, citing sources from both Barcelona and Villa, who claim the link is wide of the mark.

The chance of Villa making an offer still remains on the table but there has been no bid put forward by Emery.

Lewandowski’s game time will be delicately managed next season, and that could be decisive for Torres, if Flick convinces him on his enduring place in the wider squad across a busy season.
