The 2024-25 school year has come to a close, so it’s time to look back on some of the best spring athletes.
Here are the finalists for girls tennis player of the year:
Leah Lup, West Linn
Perhaps one of the most unlikely stories of the tennis state championships, No. 5-seeded Lup stunned the field and won the Class 6A girls singles state championship. Lup had to upset No. 3 seed Carlyta Barfield of Benson in the quarterfinals, No. 1 seed Nikhitha Suresh of Westview in the semifinals (winning that 6-4, 6-0) and then No. 4 seed Sofia Sorokina of Nelson in the finals.
Sofia Sorokina, Nelson
Sorokina was also a big story of the tennis championships. While she would end up losing 6-3, 6-4 to Lup in the finals, she had to overcome West Linn sophomore Sonya Drayton in the semifinals. Sorokina hadn’t lost a set in the state tournament before running into the eventual state champion.
Kate Bonetto, Summit
Bonetto may have an argument for upset of the season, as she was able to stymy three-time state champion Kennedy Harris of La Salle Prep in the title match. Bonetto upset Harris 6-3, 6-2 at the Tualatin Hills Athletic Center, and became the first person to beat Harris in the state championships.
Kennedy Harris, La Salle Prep
While she wasn’t able to finish the mission of becoming a four-time state champion, Harris was still a dominant force this year. She was the No. 1 seed at the Class 5A girls singles state championship, and didn’t drop a set until the finals.
Raegan Farm, North Bend
That’s back-to-back state championships for Farm, who was on a mission in 2025. After cruising through the early rounds, Farm picked up a big win over Marist Catholic sophomore Whitney Hedden in the championship match — winning 6-3, 7-6(6).
