Meet the finalists for The Oregonian/OregonLive boys tennis player of the year

The 2024-25 school year has come to a close, so it’s time to look back on some of the best spring athletes.

Here are the finalists for boys tennis player of the year:

Cayden Laughton, Lincoln

You can’t write up a debut much better than that. Laughton won the Class 6A boys singles state championship with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Mountainside’s Arnav Arora. He spent the entire spring season winning lopsided matches, only losing one set the entire year — and that was in the semifinals against Jesuit’s Tristan Hernandez.

The Class 6A boys singles runner-up, Arora was also one of the top performers of the week at the tennis state championships. He was able to outlast West Linn senior Zach Steinberg (the No. 2 seed) in a grueling 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 battle in the state semifinals before ultimately falling to Laughton in the finals.

Richard Wang, Crescent Valley

Last year, Wang fell to La Salle Prep’s Kaiden Harris in the Class 5A boys singles state championship match. This year, he got his revenge. Now a senior, Wang came back to Beaverton and picked up a stunning 6-3, 7-6(2) win over Harris for the title. It was back-to-back tough two-set wins for Wang, who beat Caldera senior Aiden Cruz 7-6(0), 6-3 in the semifinals.

EJ Roedl, Marist Catholic

That’s two Class 4A/3A/2A/1A boys singles state championships for Roedl, who beat his teammate (and brother) Ryen Roedl 6-3, 6-0 in the state finals. Roedl cruised through the state championship tournament, not losing a set, and only allowing any points in two sets.

Kaiden Harris, La Salle Prep

While he ultimately wasn’t able to repeat for the Class 5A boys singles gold, Harris was still dominant in 2025. He was the No. 1 seed in the state championship tournament, and didn’t lose any sets until the state finals. He cruised in the semifinals, besting Summit senior Austin Berg 6-0, 6-1.
