Jannik Sinner says what his relationship with Carlos Alcaraz is now like after their French Open thriller

Jannik Sinner is set to play his first match since the French Open final at the Halle Open, where he’ll play a qualifier in the first round.

Sinner’s defeat to Carlos Alcaraz was his first loss in a Grand Slam final, having emerged victorious in his last three finals appearances.

The ATP number one was agonisingly close to securing a maiden Roland Garros crown, but was overcome by the defiant Spaniard, who came back from two sets down to win it all.

In his triumph, Alcaraz joined Novak Djokovic and Gaston Gaudio as the only men in the Open Era to win a Grand Slam final after facing a match point.

It was a tough loss for the Italian to take against his rival, who he discussed ahead of his title defence in Halle.

Jannik Sinner says what his relationship is like with Carlos Alcaraz

Speaking to Tennis TV ahead of the Halle Open, Sinner said of Alcaraz: “At the end of the day, we are rivals, but we still have a great relationship.

“We saw this in the past, that you can be rivals but still friends, and this is what we try to do.

“The last six majors was me and Carlos, but things can change very quickly. The new generation is coming in, there’s still Sascha playing incredible tennis, I believe Daniil will come back again strong.

“With me and Carlos, I practice to understand what’s working with certain players and what’s not.

“I believe in Paris, I was very close, not only results-wise, but also the level was there. Enjoying that level on clay, I hope it’s going to give me the confidence to keep going.

“I think we [Alcaraz and I] are important, but as important as any other players. I don’t think only two players make the difference. There are 128 players in a Grand Slam, who make the sport very tough.

“I think me and Carlos, we are very happy to be in the position we are in.”

Jannik Sinner’s last Wimbledon campaign ahead of the 2025 championships

After his French Open run, Wimbledon is now the only Grand Slam that Sinner has never made the final of.

His best campaign was a semi-final finish in 2023, where he lost to Djokovic in straight sets.

Last year, Sinner reached the quarter-finals of the tournament, after a promising first four matches at the All England Club.

Round Opponent
Quarter-Final Daniil Medvedev (L)
Fourth Round Ben Shelton (W)
Third Round Miomir Kecmanovic (W)
Second Round Matteo Berrettini (W)
First Round Yannick Hanfmann (W)

After beating Yannick Hanfmann in round one, he defeated former Wimbledon finalist and compatriot Matteo Berrettini.

He then swept aside Miomir Kecmanovic before earning another statement win against 14th seed Ben Shelton.

Sinner’s pursuit of the title was cut short by Daniil Medvedev in the last eight over five sets.
