Broadview Heights hires Burton company to build tennis, pickleball and basketball courts

BROADVIEW HEIGHTS, Ohio — The city will pay a Burton company just less than $1 million to build two tennis courts, six pickleball courts and one basketball court at the City Hall/Leo H. Bender Community Center campus on Broadview Road.

Ronyak Paving will construct the courts on what is now green space between the community center and the Broadview Heights Police Station.

“I would assume most likely (construction will start) in the mid-summer, but I can’t get a firm date until it’s awarded and the contract signed,” city Engineer Ethan Neff told council June 2.

“I was hoping it (the winning bid) would come in cheaper … it’s pretty pricey,” council President Robert Boldt said.

Ronyak’s exact bid was $978,583.

Other offers came from Industrial Surface Sealer in Cleveland, which bid $1 million; Geauga Highway in Windham, which bid $1.1 million; and The Vasco Group in Massillon, which bid $1.3 million.

cleveland.com reached out to Neff Monday and Tuesday asking for the engineer’s estimate for the project.

The tennis and basketball courts will replace those at The Fields, a city sports fields complex on Broadview north of Ohio 82.

In November, Amanda Hutcheson, the city’s director of parks and recreation, told cleveland.com that the existing courts were in poor condition and unrepairable.

Hutcheson said the basketball court at The Fields is too close to a space where families with young children gather.

The court is next to a baseball field, so fly balls often sail over the court.

The city is building the pickleball courts due to increased interest in the sport and to give pickleball players their own dedicated space, Hutcheson said.

The city previously hired Hejduk-Cox & Associates Inc., a Solon engineering firm, to design the tennis courts for $16,989 and the basketball and pickleball courts for $33,982.
