GRIDLEY, Calif. – Gridley High School is set to expand its sports programs for the upcoming school year.
The school will introduce boys volleyball and girls flag football, adding two popular sports through the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
Principal Rikki-Lee Burresch shared with Action News Now that there are currently 97 girls who are interested in playing flag football and 69 boys who have shown interest in playing volleyball.
“Girls flag football is the fastest growing sport in CIF with over 10,000 female athletes in California,” Burresch said.
Burresch highlighted that other schools in the area have already embraced these growing sports.
“We’re gonna bring the community in a little more,” Burresch said. “We can bring him in to watch the girls’ games Monday and Wednesday nights, fill up the bleachers. We have probably 10 to 12 schools in the north section already playing boys’ volleyball. Oroville, LP, Chico, PV, all the way up to Redding and Tule Lake. So it’s really growing up here.”
Gridley High School says that they are in the process of finding a girls flag football coach.
The girls flag football season will run in the fall alongside the boys football team, while boys volleyball will take place in the spring.
