The debate over the greatest men’s tennis player of all time will continue for years to come.
Both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have now retired from tennis, with Novak Djokovic the only remaining member of ‘the big three’ still competing.
The big three were recently reunited at Roland Garros, as Nadal had his farewell ceremony at the tournament where he is a record 14-time champion.
Now former world number 11 Sam Querrey has given his verdict over who he thinks had the better career out of Nadal and Federer.

Sam Querrey reveals who he thinks was the better player out of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer
As one of the broadcasters for TNT Sports, Querrey was tasked with the idea of ranking his top five men’s tennis players of all time.
Querrey started by placing 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras in fifth spot, following it up with Bjorn Borg.
The final three places were filled by ‘the big three’, with the American answering an often debated topic.
Querrey has previously called Djokovic the greatest player in the history of the ATP Tour, but he has not revealed who he thinks was better out of Nadal and Federer.
Despite Nadal winning more Grand Slam titles, Querrey picked Federer as his second best player of all time.
“Number three I’ve got Rafael Nadal, I’m in Paris. As you know he has won the French Open 14 times,” said Querrey. “My number two, Roger Federer. 20 major titles and he’s got a million other titles as well. And number one of all time I’ve got Novak Djokovic.”
Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer Head-to-head
Although Querrey has picked Federer as a greater player than Nadal, it is the latter who had the advantage in their head-to-head.
Nadal won 24 of his 40 meetings against his former rival, despite having a losing record against Federer on hard and grass courts.
Their rivalry also included some of the biggest matches in tennis, with Nadal and Federer playing nine Grand Slam finals.
Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer | |
Hard | 11-9 Federer |
Clay | 14-2 Nadal |
Grass | 3-1 Federer |
Overall | 24-16 Nadal |
While they may have often been head-to-head when they were active players, Nadal and Federer have now developed a bond since retiring.
This has led to questions over whether there could be exhibition matches between Nadal and Federer in the future.
